Redacted archive

The Washington Apple Pi showcase archive lists this issue as "[redacted]" — the actual member directory pages (names, addresses, phone numbers) were stripped before publishing the PDF online for privacy reasons. Only the title page and a few advertising pages remain (page numbers in surviving content go up to 44+, indicating the original was 50+ pages).

Overview

Pi's 1983 Membership Directory — titled "The Cast of Characters" — printed in alphabetical order and zipcode order. Distributed in July 1983 to paid members. The directory was a separate special-edition publication from the regular monthly journal (which would have been Vol 5 No 7 published the same month — still a stub in our catalog).

The directory's existence operationalized Tom Jones's membership-card and directory work from 1980 (1980-09 — V02 N09 / 1980-10 — V02 N10) — with the member opt-in privacy policy carefully developed at the time. Only members who consented to release their info appeared in the directory.

What we know about the original

From surviving page numbers in the ads (page 23 references "Membership Directory — July 1983", page 44 references same), the directory was at least 44+ pages.

Format described on page 1 of the PDF:

"The Cast of Characters" — In Alphabetical order, In Zipcode Order

So at least two views were provided: lookup-by-name and lookup-by-geography.
