Computer Bulletin Board Systems
Summary
In 1979 Pi members ran or used a number of early Computer Bulletin Board Systems (CBBSes) — the precursors of dial-up online communities. Three local boards were highlighted in John Moon's August 1979 President's Message:
- AMRAD CBBS — (703) 281-2125, run by AMateur RADio, 24/7 on a SWTP 6800
- Bruce Thompson — part-time CBBS in Silver Spring on an 8080-based North Star with on-line games
- Lee Hausman — home-grown CBBS on his Apple, written in APPLESOFT BASIC with IDS Printer, DOS, and D.C. Hayes Micromodem
The September 1979 issue reprinted the AMRAD newsletter's nationwide CBBS list — about 40 boards across 14 states, including the early Chicago, Atlanta, Houston, Los Angeles, and San Francisco systems.
