Format milestone

The "Leaner, Greener, Meaner Journal" — Pi Journal dramatically shrinks here from ~100 pages to ~23 pages. This is the first issue of the post-print-glory era, 4½ years before the eJournal designation arrives at 2009-01 — V31 N01. Pi's bimonthly continues but with much less content per issue.

Overview

President's Corner — The Leaner, Greener, Meaner Journal (John Barnes, 3) — Barnes announces the new shorter format. The Journal he holds in members' hands is "our first try" at the new format.

Learning New Programs and Technologies (Sheri German, 4). How I Became a Book Publisher (Dan S. Wages, 8). AppleScript and You — August General Meeting (Mike Mellor, 12). Listen Up! — September General Meeting (Paige Counts, 13). WAPi at NBC4 Digital Edge Expo (Richard Rucker + John Barnes, 14). November General Meeting (Steve Roberson, 15). WAPi 2004 Garage Sale (Dec 4, 2004 at NOVA).

Editorial staff (new): Managing Editor John Barnes (also President); Macintosh/Reviews Editor Lawrence I. Charters; Tutorials Editor Pat Fauquet; Photo Editor Richard Sanderson (new role); Calendar Editor — vacant.

Highlights

★ The "Leaner, Greener, Meaner Journal"

Pi Journal's first major format change since 1995's shift to bimonthly (1995-01 — V17 N01). Pages drop from ~99 to ~23. The new format consolidates leadership, drops display advertising load, and signals declining commercial viability of the print magazine. 5 years ahead of the official "eJournal" designation at 2009-01 — V31 N01.

Barnes Editor + President

John Barnes consolidates Editor + President roles — Kathryn Murray's long Managing Editor run (since 2001) ends here. (Murray was on masthead through 2004-09 — V26 N05.)

Richard Sanderson Photo Editor

Richard Sanderson joins as Photo Editor — new role. Sanderson goes on to anchor Pi Photo Contest in the eJournal era.

NBC4 Digital Edge Expo

WAPi at NBC4 Digital Edge Expo — Pi continues annual NBC4 booth tradition (also 2001-11 — V23 N06, 2002-11 — V24 N06).

Book Publisher Memoir — Dan S. Wages

"How I Became a Book Publisher" — Pi member memoir on becoming an author with Mac-based publishing tools.

AppleScript August Meeting — Mike Mellor

AppleScript reporting — Mellor (also Quicksilver fan 2004-09 — V26 N05) writing on AppleScript.
