Overview

Tom Warrick continues as President. ★★ dPub SIG (Tom Piwowar, p19) — Tom Piwowar's first Pi byline. Piwowar becomes a major Pi voice through 1991, launches "Journal Business" column Feb 1989 as Journal lead, disappears from Pi Jul 1989. This is the earliest documented Pi byline for him — correcting backlog assumption that he was a 1989 arrival. ★ dPub SIG Minutes (Rosemary Connelly, p19) — Connelly continues. ★ Music SIG News (Raymond Hobbs, p37) — Music SIG officially launches (Hobbs becomes column lead). ★ "ByLaws Changes" (p37) — Pi bylaws revisions published for member vote. ★ "The New LaserWriter Plus" (Earl W. Douglas, p60) — review. "A Byte of Bix" (Hunter Alexander, p77) — Alexander on BIX (BYTE Information eXchange — McGraw-Hill's online service for BYTE readers). "Learning Dvorak: Meeting Report" (Michael Spevak, p18) — Spevak continues his Dvorak coverage. "Using 3D Fonts in MacDraw" (Jonathan E. Hardis, p54). "Power User Shortcut Summary" (Dan Allen, p72). "MacPaint Documents from MacForth" (Bill Wurzel, p64) — Wurzel still active in Forth. "Microtest II: A Review" (Walter Rhett, p13). "Choosing School with Computer Prog." (Rhett, p14). "Managing Your Bulk Mailing" (Martin Milrod, p63) — Milrod productivity piece. "Gato - 'Game for the Rest of Us'" (Lynn R. Trusal, p48). "Mac Compatible Home Controller" (William J. Jones, p70). "Pascal News" (Robert C. Platt, p66) — Platt's recurring Pascal column. GAMESIG cluster: American Challenge (Shipley), Black Cauldron (Smith), Wizardry for the Determined (Langford).

Highlights

★★ Tom Piwowar's first Pi byline

Tom Piwowar takes over the dPub SIG column. Correction to backlog: Piwowar's Pi presence goes back to June 1986, not 1989. He launched "Journal Business" Feb 1989 as Journal lead — that was his Pi-leadership inflection, not his Pi arrival. He'd been writing for Pi for ~2.5 years before becoming Journal lead.

Music SIG launches — Raymond Hobbs

Music SIG's monthly column formalizes. Hobbs had been writing "The Musical Apple" for years; the SIG structure makes it official.

LaserWriter Plus reviewed

The 35-font, $1675-upgrade laser printer — reviewed in detail post-launch. Pi members in publishing fields took to it immediately.
