Overview

Two big stories: Walt Mossberg launches "Apple II News and Notes" — the future Wall Street Journal personal-technology columnist (later AllThingsD, Recode) is writing for Pi as an Apple II partisan ("A Dozen Dozen for the IIGS" subtitle in the cover highlights). The DoDDS Apple IIGS contract — Apple has selected the IIGS as the standard for 270 Dept of Defense Dependent Schools overseas; Clinton Computer is the subcontractor. The article on page 3 estimates 160,000 K-12 students in 23 countries. Also: Gutenberg 3.0 ProDOS review (Mark Blass), Reflex Plus database review in SoftViews (David Morganstein), Quick Editing with QuicKeys (Louis M. Pecora), and Apple Computer's QuickShare board ("A Tie That Binds") for Apple II ↔ Mac AppleTalk.

Highlights

Apple II News and Notes — Walt Mossberg

The future Wall Street Journal personal-technology columnist (later AllThingsD/Recode/Mossberg co-founder) is writing Apple II commentary for Pi. Subhead "A Dozen Dozen for the IIGS" — a survey of IIGS productivity. Mossberg lives in DC and is a Pi member; this column would run for some time.

DoDDS Apple IIGS Contract — Clinton Computer

Apple has won the contract to put 160,000+ Apple IIGS systems into 270 Dept of Defense Dependent Schools in 23 countries over 5 years. Clinton Computer (Pi's biggest Apple dealer) is subcontractor. A landmark for Apple-in-education.

Gutenberg 3.0 ProDOS Review — Mark Blass

The legendary Canadian-developed Apple II word processor. ProDOS version updated.

A Tie That Binds: QuickShare — Robb Wolov

Apple's QuickShare board lets Apple II talk to Mac over AppleTalk — Apple finally bridging its two product lines for shared file/print services.
