Overview

Tom Warrick continues as President. The PDF's extractable content was dominated by Music SIG officer announcements and Gary Hayman's "I Love Apple Music — Simple Apple Music: Part 4" musicology series.

Music SIG officers for the upcoming year: - Chairman: Bill Bittle - Vice-Chairman #1: Carol-Lee Erikson - Vice-Chairman #2: temporarily vacant - Membership Secretary/Treasurer: Chris Ehemann - Music Librarian: Kedenzze Carpcentre - Reporter: Ray Hobbs

Next meeting Saturday Sept 12 at 1:00 PM at the White Oak Public Library (Silver Spring, MD).

"I Love Apple Music — Simple Apple Music: Part 4" (Gary Hayman) — Hayman's deep dive on translating sheet-music notation to Apple BASIC music programs. Topics covered: - Slurs vs ties — correction from Part 3 (the curved line over different-pitch notes is a slur for Legato, only same-pitch curved-line is a tie) - Tie programming rule: extend duration of the held note by both notes' combined values - Fermata (top-half-of-O with dot): pause/hold longer; suggested 10% duration increase - Staccato: dot above/below note; release key at instant of sound; programming rule: reduce duration by ~30% and add silence of 10-30% of original duration after the note. Example: eighth note (duration 32) → Staccato → duration 22 + silence 10 (using pitch 1 for silence: DATA 1, 10)

This is Pi's most technically detailed series on programmatic music for Apple II — Hayman ran "I Love Apple Music" Parts 1-7+ across 1987.

Highlights

Music SIG officer slate consolidates

Bill Bittle's chairmanship marks the SIG's formalization beyond Raymond Hobbs's individual leadership (1986-06 — V08 N06 Music SIG launch).

Hayman musicology

Hayman's series translated music-theory concepts (slurs, ties, fermatas, staccato, articulation) into Applesoft BASIC DATA statement values — a unique Pi contribution to early computer-music education.
