Overview

★★ Tom Warrick becomes the 5th President of Washington Apple Pi — his first President's Corner appears here (p2). The Pi presidency thread: Bernard Urban (1979-1980, founding) → John Moon (1980) → Urban (1980-1981) → David Morganstein (1981-1983, 1983-1985) → Warrick (1985-1988). ★ "WAP Cash Operating Budget" (p27) — Warrick's first move appears to be financial transparency, publishing Pi's operating budget for member review. ★ "Carmen Sandiego: A Review" (Robert C. Platt, p12) — Broderbund's "Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego?", launched 1985, would become an educational-software classic. ★ "Roger Keating Visits WAP" (Ronald Wartow, p15) — Roger Keating, Australian game designer (SSG / Carriers at War, Reach for the Stars), visits Pi. "From Type Slugs to Lasers" (John S. Lee, p16) — Lee begins a serialized typography history (continues 1985-09 — V07 N09). "Optical Scanning" (Leon H. Raesly, p28) — Raesly on the new world of optical character recognition. "Imagewriter Foreign Char. Sets" (Jim Kellock, p34) — international character coverage. "Apple /// Articles: A Compilation" (David Ottalini, p37) — Ottalini compiles past Apple III Pi pieces; companion "Apple /// Is For Me" (p38). "SigMac Meeting Notes" (Brooks Leffler, p40). "Mac to Superphone Link" (Ellen L. Bouwkamp, p45) — Mac→Superphone telecomms. "MacAdvantage" (Robert C. Platt, p46) — Platt's new Mac column launches (later renamed; continues through Dec 1985 as "MacAdvantage: Part III"). "MacNovice: Fantastic Fonts" (Ralph J. Begleiter, p49). "Gato for the Mac" (Michael Drolet, p57) — Spectrum HoloByte's submarine simulator. "SYSOP Wanted!" (p56) — Pi seeking a new ABBS sysop (Warrick had been doing this on top of his other duties). "NEC PC-8201A and Apple ][+" (Joan Bixby Dunham, p21). "Apple CP/M Public Domain Software" (J. England, p24). "Printers for the Apple" (Walton Francis, p20).

Highlights

★★ Tom Warrick becomes 5th President

The handoff from Morganstein (after his second term) to Warrick is complete. Warrick — Pi's SYSOP for years and the canonical Mac-launch chronicler — takes office. His tenure runs to 1988 (per 1989-01 — V11 N01 10th Anniversary Issue Platt history article).

WAP Cash Operating Budget published

A transparency move in Warrick's first issue — publishing the financials. Pi was now a 6-year-old non-profit with formal financial obligations.

Roger Keating Visits WAP — Ronald Wartow

Australian game designer Keating (Carriers at War, Reach for the Stars at SSG) visits. Apple II game scene was internationally connected; Wartow's GAMESIG was getting marquee visitors.

MacAdvantage launches — Robert C. Platt

Platt opens a new Mac column. Runs through year-end ("MacAdvantage: Part III" in 1985-12 — V07 N12).
