Overview

★★★ THE FINAL STUB — closes the 37-year archive (308 of 308 ingested). May-June 2002 issue. Lorin Evans President (in his final ~12 months — Pat Fauquet takes over after the May 2003 election). ★ Election Issue — pull-out election insert E1-E8 located after page 44; large WAP Vote! cover splash. ★ "Jedi versus the Borg: Mac OS X in a Microsoft World" (Lawrence I. Charters, p11) — Charters's signature Star Wars/Borg-themed Mac-defending essay. ★ "Microsoft looks at Macintosh" (Kevin Browne of MS, p58) — Microsoft's Mac Business Unit writes for Pi directly — a remarkable Pi-Microsoft moment given Charters's near-simultaneous "Jedi vs Borg" piece. ★ "Conclusion to the Maltese Cube" (Guy Serle, p47) — Serle's Maltese Cube parody-fiction series CONCLUDES, having begun September-October 2001 (2001-09 — V23 N05). ★ "A First Look at Photoshop 7" (by MWJ, p54) — Adobe Photoshop 7 reviewed at launch (released March 2002). ★ "What Condition are Your Windows In?" (Pat Fauquet, p15) — Mac OS X window management primer (Fauquet was VP-Programs and the incoming President). ★ "Preview in Review: Creating Acrobat Files in OS X" (Dennis Dimick, p8). ★ "Digital Video on the Cheap! (kind of)" (Guy Serle, p17). ★ "Review: AppleCare Protection Plan" (Paul Gerstenbluth, p20). ★ "I Made the Leap" (Bill Diffley, p25) — OS X switcher story. ★ "AppleWorks and Page Layout" (Christopher Nye, p22). ★ "Graphics File Formats Explained" (Tim Thomas, p23). ★ "Understanding Color" (Bob Mulligan, p28). ★ "Sentimental Journey Down Router 66" + "A Simpler Way to Share 'Net Connections" (Tim Kelly, pp 32+35) — networking duo. ★ "C-3 Rations — Just add members" (Lorin Evans, p5) — Evans's quirky President's column. ★ "Welcome to WAP" (Dave Ottalini, p4) — Maryland Terps NCAA basketball-team metaphor for Pi membership. "About Piracy" (p39). "New Mac Website Debutes" (Dave Ottalini, p65). DC column trilogy: Genealogist looking for photo solutions (p63); efrag drive for optimum performance (p66); Scanner useless while manual still missing (p68). WAP Garage Sale + Computer Show and Sale Jun 15, 2002 (8am-2pm; Members $5/person, Non-members $6, Tables $15). WAP Summer Camp (p36) — youth programming. WAP MacWorld Trip (p14).

Highlights

★★★ THE FINAL STUB CLOSES THE 37-YEAR ARCHIVE

With this entry, the Washington Apple Pi Journal wiki contains all 308 of 308 known issues from February 1979 (1979-02 — V01 N01) through Spring 2016 (2016-03 — V38 N01). Pre-1989 gaps closed earlier 2026-05-28; 2008 N5 and 2002 N3 were the last two inland holes — both now closed.

★ Jedi versus the Borg — Lawrence I. Charters

Charters's now-famous Star Wars / Star Trek hybrid metaphor: the Mac (Jedi) defending against Microsoft Windows (the Borg) in early 2002. Paired in the same issue with Microsoft Mac BU's Kevin Browne writing directly to Pi members — the editorial contradiction is the joke.

★ Microsoft looks at Macintosh — Kevin Browne

Kevin Browne (Microsoft Mac Business Unit) writes a piece for Pi about Microsoft's Mac strategy. A rare instance of a Microsoft byline in Pi's pages. Browne later left MS and became a known Mac-community voice.

★ The Maltese Cube concludes

Guy Serle's parody-fiction series began 2001-09 — V23 N05 and ran through Nov-Dec 2001 + Jan-Feb 2002 + Mar-Apr 2002 (a year-plus run). The conclusion in this issue finally answers the Pi 25th anniversary open question about how long Maltese Cube ran (see backlog).

Pat Fauquet's window-mgmt primer

Fauquet was VP-Programs in this issue and would become Pi's 7th President after the May 2003 election (per 2003-07 — V25 N04 handoff from Evans). Her OS X piece foreshadows her presidential tenure as the Mac-OS-X-transition-era Pi voice.
